DRAI
The DRAI: Detention Risk Assessment Instrument
Sample DRAI
The Detention Risk Assessment Instrument (DRAI) is a 13-question objective risk-based
instrument tool that informs placement recommendations at the first appearance and/or
warrant review hearing. The DRAI can be completed on all youth admitted to detention
with a new offense or warrant. The majority of the DRAI covers a variety of items
and, based on the outcome, produces a DRAI recommendation.
The 3 types of Recommendations the DRAI makes are:
- Secure Detention
- Eligible for Alternative to Secure Detention Positive affect
- Eligible for Release Without Restriction
Additionally, the DRAI allows for a "Screener Override" that allows staff to override
the DRAI Recommendation. However, if a Screener Override is chosen, the staff has
to fill out a separate section of DRAI explaining their Recommendation and why they
made the decision to override. The DRAI includes signature fields on the bottom
of the page which allow staff, having printed out a completed DRAI, to sign off
on the assessment for further use in court, hard-copy record keeping, etc.
